There is the practical aspect of projection. We are so accustomed to think of mind function as the function of the waking mind that we wonder sometimes at the subtlety and intelligence displayed by the mind in sleep. This is only revealed fully on analysis, for the manifest content of the dream is often a poor motley affair, a mere patchwork, and it is only through investigation that the beautiful dream work is discovered. Nevertheless, even so the dream picture often brings together material in such a way as to be suggestive.

Sometimes it is done only by damping down anxiety. The anxiety subject who feels himself in danger of projecting symbols which are taboo in his group will restrict Introjection and Projection, being satisfied to live only in humdrum situations ; or he takes drugs or drink or indulges in long hours of sleep. The anxiety subject in a crisis must be kept quiet on this same account and, if necessary, controlled by sedatives, in case he create Projection situations which will furnish fresh material for Introjection.
