These kinds of facts about representation and algorithm are easily obscured at the level of implementation because the details of hardware do not allow the logic of the computer's behavior to shine through. This logic is captured at the middle level, which abstracts away from the physics of circuits and chips to describe how the hardware is being used. The third, computational, level abstracts away even further. At this level computational analysis of the computer provides a mathematically transparent description of what it is doing by providing, for example, an equation for the function being calculated.

A central idea of modern cognitive science is that the human cognitive system can be understood as though it were a giant computer engaged in a complex calculation. As with the computer, it is assumed that we may approach human cognition at the three levels just described. In the case of language, for example, the level of implementation corresponds to neurological analysis of the structures and connections in the brain that underlie the use of language. The level of representation and algorithm focuses on the processing of information by the system and on the format of linguistic knowledge stored in memory.

Levels of Analysis for Cognitive Faculties The choice of chapters for each part has also been influenced by an important methodological principle. Since the appearance of an influential monograph by David Marr (1982), it has been widely appreciated that a given cognitive competence can be investigated at three levels of analysis. The levels are often given these names: 1. implementation2. representation and algorithm 3. computation The following analogy explains these distinctions. A computer engaged in a complex calculation may be approached at each of the three levels.
